Speed Up Firefox 3.5 Start-Up

Firefox 3.5 pulls data from certain file locations for randomized security purposes. Sometimes, though, that can lead to annoying slow start-ups in Windows. You can speed things up by cleaning out certain folder locations.

For whatever reason, having too many temporary, history, or recent document files sitting in your Windows locations slows down Firefox 3.5's data generation processes, as it has been  reported as a bug. The Mozilla Links blog recommends cleaning out these folders to move the browser's work along:

C:\Documents and Settings\*user*\Local Settings\History
C:\Documents and Settings\*user*\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\*user*\My Recent Documents
C:\Documents and Settings\*user*\Temp\

On Vista  simply replace "Documents and Settings" with "Users."

SPL consider alternative TV offers from ESPN & Sky

A glimmer of hope for the armchair Fan if this is stood up:

But while Setanta's 450 staff were left bracing themselves for administration - possibly as early as Monday - and there was still no sign of the SPL's outstanding money, details were emerging of two rival offers from ESPN and Sky, guaranteeing 90% and 60%-70% respectively of the deal agreed with Setanta. A £125m contract over four years was due to begin with the broadcaster at the start of 2010.

Which, if the percentages quoted are correct, means our domestic TV rights would be worth circa £1.35 million or £900,000 - £1.05 million for the remainder of the current deal with the unrealistic £125 million deal due to commence in 2010 becoming a more credible £112.5 million or £75 - £87.5 million.

Perhaps the end of the world is not so close.Smile

Best DVD Ripping Tools

Whether you want to watch a movie on your iPod or back up your too-easily-scratched DVDs, DVD ripping is a mysterious realm for many. Even those in-the-know find it difficult to keep up with the best tools for the job, especially in the face of increased copy protection. cast your vote to determine the best ripper of the bunch.  DVD Shrink Despite the fact that the freeware DVD Shrink (download) hasn't been in active development for years, this freeware decrypter, ripper, and compressor is still a favorite all-in-one stop for ripping and backing up DVDs. Its compression feature is what sets DVD Shrink apart, compressing 8GB dual-layer DVDs down to 4GB sizes that will fit on standard, single-layer DVD-Rs (i.e., the type of DVDs most consumers can burn to). It's even inspired us to write our very own DVD Shrink helper application, DVD Rip, which turns the already simple DVD Shrink process into a one-click ripping affair. HandBrake

The free, cross-platform HandBrake makes ripping DVDs to a bevy of useful, playable file formats a cinch, with support for iPods, PSPs, Apple TVs, PS3s, and pretty much any other format your device requires. It's fast, free, and takes the difficulty out of both ripping and transcoding.

DVDFab HD Decrypter

Much like DVD Shrink, DVDFab HD Decrypter cuts through copy protection and rips DVDs to your hard drive. Unlike DVD Shrink, DVDFab does not offer compression tools. DVDFab is shareware, but its trial version lets you do nearly as much as you'd ever need. That said, users who pony up for the platinum edition don't seem to have any regrets

Ashampoo Burning Studio

Free application Ashampoo Burning Studio Free is yet-another CD and DVD burning utility. Ashampoo handles virtually any burning need, from music CDs and video DVDs (Blu-ray support included) to data discs. It also supports burning compressed and encrypted backup discs. Granted, there are already plenty of burning utilities already available, but for anyone who remembers how difficult it used to be to find a free app to handle this sort of thing (i.e., not Roxio), the more options the merrier.

Mowbray, Hartson, Sutton, McGhee

Speculation continues apace about managerial vacancies at Parkhead, Motherwell, Falkirk and Aberdeen with the names of McGhee, Hartson, Sutton and Mowbray being bandied around.

The warm glow of SPL title success at Tannadice and the subsequent cup win has been made that much rosier as we watch Peter Lawwell penny pinching his way around potential managerial candidates - whatever happened to the healthy balance sheet so puffed on Radio Clyde?

The enjoyment of Lawwell's discomfort could be a taster of next season's SPL because what could be more enjoyable than winning title fifty three when half the league is managed by former yahoos.

The weekly whingeing about bias from McGhee, Hartson, Sutton, Mowbray if they are appointed and Hughes who is appointed could be solid gold.

Add Lennon if he survives and Grant if he arrives and the gold could be platinum plated.

Next season will be fun.

Setanta founders seek additional funding

In a desperate effort to save Setanta its founders Leonard Ryan and Michael O'Rourke are to seek a cash injection from high net worth ROI citizens.

Amongst those approached are telecoms tycoon Denis O'Brian and concert promoter Denis Desmond.

Investors on occasion want input to how their funds are deployed - those who plough money in to a rapidly sinking ship will have more than a passing interest in how their money is spent.

They may even demand an element of editorial control of the nature and bias of the broadcaster's output.

WINTER WONDERLAND

Rangers and AC Milan drew 2-2 at Ibrox in a thoroughly entertaining friendly.

Attendance 45,197 enthralled throughout on a bitterly cold evening.

Milan's galaxy of stars were all there - Ronaldinho, Kaka, David Beckham,
Andrea Pirlo, Filippo Inzaghi, Andriy Shevchenko, Clarence Seedorf and the new wonderkid - Pato.

Manager Walter Smith meanwhile made five changes from Saturday with Sasa Papac,
Steven Naismith, Maurice Edu, Lee McCulloch and Kyle Lafferty replacing Kirk Broadfoot,
Steve Davis, Barry Ferguson, Kris Boyd and the injured Nacho Novo.

Rangers were the first to threaten Kyle Lafferty's thirteenth minute header from a John Fleck
cross being just too high.  Milan were always dangerous however - Ronaldinho releasing Inzaghi in 41 minutes only for McGregor to block his effort, then right on the cusp of the interval the
Brazilian superstar was denied by a timely tackle from Madjid Bougherra.

A flood of substitutions at the interval saw six replacements for the home side who now
had Neil Alexander in goal behind a central defence of Christian Dailly  and Broadfoot, whilst up front there was a rare outing for Andrius Velicka
For the visitors Beckham made way for Seedorf.

Alexander was soon called into action - holding Shevchenko's turn and shot
from a Seedorf pass in the opening minute of the half.

Kaka substituted for Ronaldinho on the hour.
The Brazilian received a standing ovation from the home fans for a stunning individual
effort - and he reciprocated in kind. Clearly this was one star who appreciated
true football fans and sportsmen.

Rangers were far from down however - Papac coolly levelling the scoreline in 82
minutes following a run from Aaron.

The Spanish substitute almost stole the winner three minutes later when his 25-yard
free-kick flashed inches wide.

The 2-2 draw was a fair result however - and both sides received a massive ovation
at the final whistle.
